Mission & Policy Statement

Kilkenny & Carlow Contact exists to help older people who may feel lonely or isolated in Kilkenny & Carlow . Our main aim is to hold out a hand of friendship and support to all older people, and to do this we recruit, train and support volunteers to befriend and visit them on a weekly basis.

Kilkenny & Carlow Contact train, support and supervise our volunteers to the best of our abilities, and resolve to act quickly if difficulties arise. Volunteers are a major resource to Kilkenny Contact and make a vital contribution to us to help us achieve our goals.


A volunteer is understood to be a person who undertakes voluntary work on our behalf and with our consent. It is undertaken by choice and is unpaid.


The purpose of this document is to provide guidance on all aspect of volunteering in Kilkenny & Carlow Contact. It does not constitute a binding contract. It adds to and supplements other of CCC policies and procedures, such as our mission statement, visitor’s agreement and value base.


The involvement of volunteers will be encouraged and supported by Kilkenny & Carlow Contact whenever possible.

All volunteers offering their services to the Contact Service will have their offers dealt with promptly and are given a warm welcome, which reflects the value we give to volunteers.

Kilkenny & Carlow Contact will consider involving anyone as a volunteer. Individuals however should be able to demonstrate a commitment to the aims of the organisation and may only be placed if their needs as volunteers match the needs of the organisation.

Kilkenny & Carlow Contact equal opportunities policy applies to volunteering. No volunteer will be discriminated against on the grounds of Age, Gender, Race, Religion, Sexual Orientation, Disability, Ethnic Origin or Family Status.

Recruitment and Selection

Kilkenny & Carlow Contact recruit volunteers through local publicity campaigns and information sessions.

All Volunteer applicants will be obliged to supply the names of two referees who are willing to provide Kilkenny & Carlow Contact with references on their behalf. All references will be checked by telephone or written correspondence. Referees supplied can not be related to the applicant.

All volunteers will be required to complete an application and Garda vetting form

The following example of offences/convictions are regarded as ones which would deem the prospective volunteer unsuitable for a role as a visitor/befriender to Older People.

  •  Offences against the person
  • Offences against state
  • Drug Offenses
  • Child Pornography
  • Theft Offences
  • Deception Offences

Note: This is not an exhaustive list

All decisions on the suitability of a volunteer for Kilkenny & Carlow Contact, and especially those which are relevant to their role as a befriender/visitor to an older person, will be made by the Management Team of the Befriending Service.

A volunteer role description is developed to clearly outline the aims of the visitation service.

All volunteers will receive an induction to Kilkenny & Carlow Contact’s Organisation and appropriate training for their volunteer role.


All Volunteers will be asked to sign a visitors agreement form which outlines the responsibilities of both parties in the volunteering arrangement

Volunteers will be given ongoing support and supervision as needs arise to enable to carry out their role effectively.

All Volunteers will be under the supervision of the Coordinator of Kilkenny & Carlow Contact

All volunteers involved with Kilkenny Contact are covered by Insurance

Kilkenny & Carlow Contact’s position is to obtain Garda Clearance for everyone that works in our Services (i.e. staff and volunteers). We are committed to achieving this at the earliest opportunity.

Kilkenny & Carlow Contact respects the Volunteers right to privacy and confidentiality. In turn, Volunteers are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of all privileged information they may be exposed to while volunteering with KCC.

The Coordinator of KCC is responsible for ensuring that the policy and procedures in this document are implemented efficiently and effectively. The Management Committee of KCC will facilitate this process

This Policy should be read in conjunction with the visitor agreement, lone worker policy and mission statement of KCC.
